CRPC was planted in Taichung in 2013. In 2015, the church started renting its current location in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw away from the Natural Science Museum. It has grown to a membership of over 60 and regular attenders averaging around 75 on a Sunday morning.
The church was approached by the landlord a few months ago and notified of his desire to sell the building, as the church had invested significantly into the building, including decorating, air conditioning units, and the likes, the landlord wanted to give us priority of buying. The church members voted to indicate a desire to stay at the current location, and the process of fundraising for the purchase of the building began at the beginning of February.
CRPC meets in the basement of an office and residential building, in a space that could currently allow for a main hall that could seat 120 (max capacity) and three class rooms as well as an office for the minister, a ministry apprentice and a full time administrator. The demographic of the church is mostly young families, with a few young single professionals and a few in their middle age.
Children make up over 20% of our attendees on a Sunday morning. The church believes that in addition to being fit for our current purpose, it also provides enough room for future growth, if the extra seating is required, the space can be reorganized to seat around 200, while retaining most of the class rooms and perhaps the office space.
In a city of over 2.8 million people CRPC is the only church with an explicitly reformed theology, a presbyterian understanding of church governance, and an emphasis on expository preaching. We draw people from all over Taichung and its surrounding areas, and so being central in the city with convenient parking is vital for the continued growth of the church. It is also hoped that as the members of the congregation live out their faith and the glory of the Lord Jesus is witnessed to their various communities, more will come to faith, and churches will be planted in the different locales in the city. Our central location would then act as a hub to reach the city.
Our goal for this fundraising effort is NTD 23.5 million (roughly USD 840k). It’s an extremely reasonable offer for the size and location of the building, however, it is still a lot of money for a relatively small church.
